WordPress for Android 1.3: Feature Fest

We just released WordPress for Android 1.3 to the Android Market and it’s jam-packed with hot new features. Get ready for even more powerful blogging-on-the go with these nifty additions:

View Stats on the Go

You can now view your blog’s stats right from your phone! Go to the fourth tab in the App, and check it out: You can see your page views, post views, referrers, search terms, and clicks — all in real time! There’s also an easy-to-read line chart for your page views:

Moderate Multiple Comments at Once

Save time by moderating several comments at once with the new “bulk edit” feature. Simply click the checkbox next to the comments you want to moderate followed by the status button that you want to apply.

Stylize Your Text with the Visual Editor

You can now create your posts with stylized text using the new visual editor! We’ve added new formatting buttons, including strikethrough and underline.

More Great Changes

The 1.3 release also includes many small enhancements and bug fixes, including better video embedding and resizing, new tab icons, and a redesigned post writing screen.

A Call to Android Developers

Did you know that WordPress for Android is an open source project, and anyone can contribute? We’re still recruiting devs to make this app the best it can be! If you’re interested, you can find us over at the developer blog.

  1. Hi, after last update app switch to polish language by default but translation seems incomplete. Please allow users to change default app language to english. Additionally if you want pls. Send me language file and ill translate it. Kind regards, piotr

  2. As someone who is iJealous right now, I have to admit that you are one of the few polished apps on Android that would make me even want to “consider” switching away from the blessed iDevice.

Either way, you’ve done a fantastic job on this app, although it gives me motivation to bug the iOS team (as they’re slacking up!). 😉

  3. I posted a few things to my blog today and even though the spacing showed correctly on the app, when it posted, there were no spaces between paragraphs.

  4. Actually, the permission is READ_PHONE_STATE. It is used to determine the orientation of the phone, and display the layout correctly.

Its a *very* basic permission that I’m guessing a lot of applications have.

  5. Ok, that permission is needed in order to capture data that is used for reporting purposed such as software version and device language like you see in this post. Be assured that we are not reading your phone calls or your phone number.

  6. I was really excited to see that you now support stats, a feature I’ve been missing for a while.

But why doesn’t it work with my own selfhosted wordpress(.org) site?

All the other features works just fine with my blog, but not the stats feature.

When clicking on the stats tab, I’m asked for a username and password to wordpress.COM…

  7. Thank you.
I suggest the security permissions are explained in a FAQ, just to avoid questions like mine in the future.

  8. sorry, I figured it out my self, I have a wordpress.COM profile and this is ofcourse where I get my stats from…

    LOVE this app!!!!

  9. I love the app, makes it very easy to upload posts and media to my WordPress blog. However, the orientation of the picture uploaded seems somewhat arbitrary. Photos I take vertically are uploaded turned 90 degrees, and when I rotate it on the phone before adding it it doesn’t change anything. Horizontal photos seem fine most of the time. The app either needs to not guess what the orientation is, or let me rotate it…

  10. I actually have a Samsung Galaxy Spica / i5700. Some apps do however work correctly, for instance FlickrDroid and Springpad do correctly upload the photo. Is there no way to add some logic detecting which way the photo was taken and what the orientation should be?

  11. Am I missing it, or does this app not currently allow uploading “audio” files as one of the media types?

I’m using HIFICORDER to create mp3s, and would like to publish simple audio podcasts. *The roadblock I’ve had so far is that when I try to publish a posting via email, the email systems I use have a file size limit on the attached media. I think I’ve successfully published a 9 min mp3, but want about a 20 min file. **I work at a small university and want to offer an easy way to publish audio podcasts to our faculty.

  12. When I click the stats button, I’m asked for my WordPress.com login information. I have filled it in multiple times and confirmed it is correct but each time I click “save” it thinks for a bit and then asks me for the name/password all over again.

I uninstalled and re-installed and am still having the same issue.

    I’m using the HTC Incredible.

Any ideas? And thank you so much for your work on this application!

  14. We’ve found a bug related to this that we’ll get fixed in the next release. Sorry for the delay in getting stats going for you guys.

  15. Last update breake te app. Please allow lang selection otherwise its simple impossible to use app . In my droid it opens with grey box in the center and thats all. I cant even close properly th app because theres no yes/no buttons.

  16. Same here – on android with Polish the app is completely broken. black rectangle on the center of the screen

  17. I’m extremely grateful for this app and especially it’s recent development. However, for some reason, uploading a 3GP video to WordPress via the app with embedding enabled will always create an embed with a width of 0px and height of 16px. Any ideas what that could be?

  18. D’oh. My bad. Tested it again just now. When it first came out, I tested it and then checked on the source of an older post. Sorry for alarming you.

So, yay, I can really use that thing now. 🙂

  19. When I try to add a new blog on a Motorola Milestone (Euro version of the Droid) running Android 2.1-update1 (and WordPress 1.3) it brings up the text entry dialogs then drops me back to the home screen.

    Any ideas?

  20. I’ve got this downloading as I type. I know it won’t be as powerful as being online, but it’ll certainly help me to keep my blogs updated on the go 🙂

  21. I just downloaded version 1.3.1 on my HTC hero and when I try to access my WordPress.com blog it crashes with the message “Sorry! The application … has stopped unexpectedly” and asks me to force close. Was working fine before the update, but didn’t notice if I was updating from 1.3.0 or 1.2.

  22. Thanks for your reply. Other applications are running (such as twitter and ebuddy) so I don’t think it is a network outage. I also tried over wifi but it still has the problem.

  23. My HTC Incredible used to be able to upload photos with no problem. Since the latest update I get an error every time I try. I tried reinstalling but am getting the same error.

  24. same issue here with my Hero, but never worked at all before.

App will log-in, displays site for some milliseconds and than terminates itself as mentioned by Dave.

    Have a self-hosted WordPress-blog.

However, works perfectly fine with the corresponding iphone app and my website.

    Any suggestion?
    Cheers, G

  25. Just started using this nice app. I ran into a problem when trying to upload media though. I get a message saying the media could not be uploaded.
I am using a htc desire with sense. Any ideas? I thought the media problem on the sense phones were fixed in 1.2 already??

  26. Answering the unasked question: the app does not crash. It gives me a popup: trying to upload soandso. A window with the message: post edited successfully, but an error was encountered when uploading media:
then comes the ok button. so no description of the error. i am trying to upload only fotos.

  27. On my Hero, This worked perfectly until the latest update 1.3.1. Now I get an error message of:

The application WordPress (process org.wordpress.android) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. I did a uninstall and reinstall, but still the same error :(. Emailed the developer, nothing yet.

  28. Does anyone know which sort of video files are supported? I remember the Instinct solely might dl 3gp using opera mini. I downloaded the twist ap, maybe that is the problem? How can I watch videos from websites other than youtube? Which file types? Normally I’m given the option of 3gp or mpeg4. Cannot get both to work. Thank you to your time! Damn I wish I used to be eligible for the improve to EVO!

  29. How do I switch between the html and visual editor? Right now it seems that I only have access to the html editor.

  30. If you have any ad blocking apps installed like AdFree installed, remove them. Also make sure that your carrier allows access to stats.wordpress.com.

  31. Two q’s:
    1) Will this work with a Moto Cliq on Android 1.5?
    2) Can I post to Blogger with this?

  32. i just purchased the droid and downloaded wordpress for it- im having a difficult time uploading anytype of media to my blog- keeps telling me the post was sent but there was an error with the media upload-

    any ideas

  33. I have the same problem as Billy & Angelo; keep getting errors uploading media. I’ve tried an app remove/reinstall/update, plus checked the WP upload folder location & permissions. I’m on a 2.1 Hero

  34. I reinstalled this App on my HTC Desire today and the stats page is failing to show anything more recent than Jan 11. It keeps asking me for a WP.com log in, even though I set the app up for a WP.org site. I did used to have a WP.org site but moved to self-hosted several months ago!

Can you please help as the stats page is the biggest used feature for me?

  35. Thanks for the response.

This app has worked for me in the past, it was only this morning when I reinstalled it that it stopped showing the stats!

I have double-checked and my blog already has WP.com Plugin stats installed???

  36. WordPress won’t open on my android even though I downloaded it. Every time I try to open it, I get a message saying,
“The application WordPress (process org.wordpress.android) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.”

Then it gives me the option to force close or report. I have reported several times, but it still does not work. Can you help me?

  37. All works (now I’ve renamed XMLRPC.PHP and renamed it within the other files needed, but stats doesn’t work (I see your response above, thanks for getting on this) and Dashboard doesn’t work either, it says

“faultCode -32700 faultString parse error. not well formed”

Any idea why I get this, is there something else I can do to make it work?

  38. I’d recommend trying turning a few plugins on/off to see if that helps – this error could potentially mean that the XML-RPC return contains invalid characters or is otherwise malformed. It’s common for plugins to add to/alter the API to fit their needs, but sometimes things go wrong! Switching themes, temporarily, to the default theme would help narrow down the culprit as well.

If it still doesn’t work, please check out the forums for further help: https://android.forums.wordpress.org/
