Version 3.6 is here: redesigned first time experience

wpios-3-6-nuxHey there! We’ve been busy since our last update and we’re excited to announce WordPress for iOS 3.6 is now available in the App Store. The main focus of this release was creating a great first time user experience, but we’ve included many other improvements as well. Read on for the details!

Redesigned setup

Previously, if you’d never before used the app, or if you were new to WordPress in general, the app might not have felt very welcoming when first getting started. With this update we change all that. Now, when you launch the app for the first time we showcase what’s possible.

If you don’t have a site yet, now it’s easier than ever to create a new WordPress.com site straight from the app, and if you already have a WordPress site, just enter your username, password, and site address and you’ll be ready to go. If you have Jetpack installed, you’ll be prompted for your WordPress.com credentials to get access to Stats and notifications.

New post shortcuts

Chances are, if you are going to the posts list you probably want to create a new post, and the same goes for pages. Now you’ll find a + symbol on the sidebar that’ll take you straight to the editor, ready to compose a new post or page in no time.

Thanks to maxday for his first contribution

Other improvements

Other things improved in 3.6:

  • Faster notifications: we noticed a few redundant things that were making notifications slower than they needed to be, so we optimized that.
  • Emoticons! Notifications now show Emoji for all the known WordPress emoticons.
  • More translations: the app is now fully translated to 12 languages, and we welcome Danish, Korean, and Russian to the list. Let us know if you want to help with translation.

What’s next?

Coming up soon, we are finishing up yet another release with an improved Reader, and a better system to store your passwords.

  1. What about the last “What’s next?”

We want to continue making your mobile blogging experience better and better! While the dev team is currently deciding what to work on for version 3.6, these next items are high on our list:

    Rich Text Editor
    Improved media management
Sharing to the app from third-party apps and services

    • Hi, those are still high in the list, which doesn’t mean they are first. We have a release focused on the reader almost ready, and after that we’re considering iterating on media management.

  3. Hi, really like the new version! Would it be possible to have multiple picture uploads as I think this would be a really great feature and would save loads of time when there is more than one photo you want to include or for blogs driven by photo events. The interface shows the camera roll so just need the ability to select multiple photos from the mobile version of the app.

  4. Do you need to have a different password for the mobile forum? My wordpress password doesn’t work. Was trying to comment that the reader doesn’t update. Weekly Photo Challenge reader is a month old!!! Thanks for the continued improvements.

    • The username/password you use for wordpress.org should work for the forums as well.

We’re currently finishing the last touches on our next release focused on a new reader, so that should be out in a few weeks
